Quick Goals Update

I’m going to do this month’s goals update a little differently – mostly for the sake of time and brevity.  My goals can be broadly categorized into Physical Wellbeing, Emotional/psychological Wellbeing, and Other (I guess).  I’ll still use the same colour coding as before, but I’ll just give a brief update for each category:

Physical Wellbeing:

1. Half marathon training
2. 1000Km in 2015
3. Other means of exercise
4. Healthier eating

April was a hard month physically.  I was not feeling well on multiple occasions, making it difficult to get out and run.  I started off the month well with a few good, long runs, but that quickly gave way to my health difficulties.  Despite not running as much, I did manage to keep up with TaeKwonDo – and I promoted another belt level, too!  I didn’t come close to following my training schedule or getting enough Kms for the month.  However, my Half Marathon is coming up in less than 3 weeks… so it’s do or die this month!
As far as eating goes – I have been bad about packing my own food.  Despite that, I have made a concerted effort to pack some stuff (yogurt, fruit, healthy snacks, nuts) and supplement with healthier options at work.  My biggest downfall, though, has been the sweet snacking.  When stress gets high, I can’t resist the sweet, soft, chocolatey carbohydrates!

This month I will work a little harder on food choices.  I am on a mission to fit into that bridesmaid’s dress, after all!

Emotional Wellbeing:

5. “Me” time at least 1x per week
6. Putting myself first 
7. Quality time with the kids
8. More “present’ for Husband

I am beginning to feel like I have the emotional well-being side of things under better control.  Despite not feeling well ad taking a hit on the physical activity, I have been continuing to take some time for myself.  Notably, since the night time anxiety attacks started up, I have gotten back into my meditation.  I have meditated for 16 days in a row now, and I am happy to say that there have been no night time attacks in that time!  I am currently working on a series of meditations specifically geared towards anxiety and I am finding it really helpful.
I am also getting my migraines under better control through massage, chiropractor, and acupuncture.  I have been meaning to write a blog post about how well my complementary alternative medicine practices have been helping with my anxiety and headaches… I just haven’t had the time!  Anyhow, I consider all of this to be part of “Me Time” and “Putting Myself First.”
As for my family time – With the nice weather now, husband and the kids and I have been going for more family walks, riding bikes, and just “hanging out.”  What I’d like to see more of, though, is us eating together as a family.  With husband busy at his new clinic and me working crazy hours, it doesn’t happen very often.  But, we are getting there… slowly…


9. Establishing a new social circle
10. Be more gracious and positive
11. Read 12 books in 2015 (one per month)

I have to say, I cannot be happier with my new circle of friends that I have made here – especially with my TKD “peeps.”  A few of the ladies I hang out with have kids the same age as mine, so we have a few play-dates every month.  My friends at TKD are encouraging and supportive when it comes to being physically active – and they are also lighthearted and fun to joke around with.  I feel like it might be time to catalog this goal as “Complete” for the year!  Let’s hope it stays that way… 😉
This month I finished reading “Lost and Found” by Alice Munroe.  It was a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a lighthearted, yet serious read.  I am happy to say that I am sitting at 5 books over 4 months – and I have another on the go right now.  In addition to all the reading I did while I was on call this past month, I also watched a lot of The Food Network in the resident lounge.  One thing I really noticed was how negative and degrading all the criticism was from all the judges on the cooking shows!  It was all so negative that it made me almost want to turn off the TV!  What happened to good old encouragement?  Even a little?  I decided to take this observation as evidence that I have been working more on being positive and having optimistic thoughts.  I definitely do have some days where I am down and feeling sad – and dwelling on some things from the past that still get me down (you all know what those are).  However, I have come a long way from where I was just 4 months ago!

Overall, my goals are headed in the right direction.  I feel like I am making some really great progress on most of them, and some poor progress on others.  I guess they can’t all be perfect all the time.  I am finding, though, that as some of the goals fall into place (like the friendships, positivity, personal time, etc), it frees up time to work on the other goals.  This month I will really be focusing on food choices and running my Half-Marathon.  Since I didn’t train well for it up until now, I will have to take it easy to ensure I don’t injure myself.  Wish me luck!

  1. Just having the goals in the first place is already a major accomplishment because it makes you more likely to think about them which, in turn, makes you more likely to work on them. Great job! You inspire me to make up a list…a much smaller one, of my own goals to work towards 🙂 Thanks!

  2. You’re doing really well. I’m impressed you manage to fit so much in to your busy life, but I’m also pleased to see that you’re succeeding with the very important goals – me time, friends, and family time.

    Do you think that holding yourself accountable via this blog helps? Maybe that’s what I need to do.
