Day 9: A Moment in Happiness

“Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.”

~Guillaume Apollinaire

On this date one year ago, I joined a splurge group with K.  That night symbolized an important moment for me, and I think this quote captures it well.

Happiness encompasses so many different things: It can have different meanings for different people, and we all measure our level of happiness against varying standards.  I like to think that my happiness is multifactorial and that there isn’t just one thing that ultimately defines whether or not I’m happy.  With so many different pursuits happening simultaneously, it is often difficult to know (or define) a moment when you have achieved “complete happiness” in life.

My relationship with K has history: it is kind of long, convoluted, personal, and maybe a little weird (I attribute it mostly to my screwed up psychology).  If you’re a long time blog follower, you know what I’m talking about.  If you’re new, well all I can say is that there is a lot to read about!  My “pursuit of happiness” as it applies to this friendship was never an easy road because of my mental obstacles, as well as the hierarchical obstacles  in our professional relationship.  Becoming “friends” with K was something that I never imagined was possible, despite the fact that it was something I really, really wanted.  Regardless, on November 9th of last year, we took a walk together before I joined her for my first splurge outing, and that was the moment I truly realized that we were “real friends.”

“We walked together.  We gossiped, we chatted, we joked, we laughed, we complained… We had a very real, normal, natural conversation that, to anyone looking in, would look like a strong and vibrant friendship.”
For that night I let all my uncertainties, all my worries,  and all my insecurities fall to the wayside and I just experienced my happiness.  It didn’t matter that other pursuits in my life were not where I wanted them to be – this one was there and I didn’t let it pass by unnoticed.

It is those moments of real, true happiness that remind us that life is wonderful.  If we worry too much or we try to hard, it is easy to miss those little moments.  But we live for those.  We work for those.  And, those are the moments that remind us to keep moving forward

  1. I don’t know if you ever do this, but often I wonder… hm, am I happy? Am I happy with life in general, even though I’m sad today? Am I secretly sad inside? It’s all very weird haha.
