I saw this picture on my facebook today. It certainly hit a chord for me and I have a feeling it will for some of you as well. Not too long ago I posted my feelings and opinions about Victim Blaming and how women are may fear men; this woman and her statement are right up the alley of that discussion.
This picture was originally posted on the STFU, Conservatives tumbler page. I don’t know anything about that blog, but I took a quick peek at it when I went to find this picture, and it seems like they have some interesting commentaries.
Anyway, as I was looking at the picture and reading the associated comments, I was quite taken aback and angered by what some [ignorant] people have to say about this issue. It is quite disgusting. Sorry, Disgusting isn’t even a good enough word.
Then I saw this part of the comment section near the end:
One person wrote,
“But then again, its kind like putting a meat suit on and telling a shark not to eat you”.
To which the blog authors responded (with bolded text):
“We (men) are not fucking sharks!
We are not rabid animals living off of pure instinct
We are capable of rational thinking and understanding.
Just because someone is cooking food doesn’t mean you’re entitled to eat it.
Just because a banker is counting money doesn’t mean you’re being given free money.
Just because a person is naked doesn’t mean you’re entitled to fuck them.
You are not entitled to someone else’s body just because it’s exposed.
What is so fucking difficult about this concept?”
LIke I said before, I don’t know anything about the writers of this STFU, Conservatives blog, but they are sure on the right side of the debate, in my opinion.

I don’t think they’re labeling it right. It’s not fear of men, it’s fear of rapists and the like. Not all men rape and not all rapists are men. A shark is a predator, a rapist is a predator.
I get the meaning of the image, most distinctly, but you have to be somewhat appropriate. Somewhat intelligent to self preservation. Would this woman freely do this on a New York city subway in a seedy part of the area? Don’t think so. Yes, when raped we shouldn’t have to be asked by cops or other law professionals what we were wearing or why we were alone. We should do our damnedest to get the creeps off the street and make stricter laws and heavier sentences and consequences for sex offenders. But to a true sex offender, it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing.

I see your point CB, and I agree that this is not a practical way to dress at anytime, unless you are out at some gathering or rally to make a point… and I think that’s probably what’s going on here. You’re right, attitudes need to change, and that doesn’t mean that women should use that as an excuse to be inappropriate beyond social norms.

Exactly what you said. I am trying to be more succinct in the way I express my thoughts. Work in progress. 😀

I love this message! I love the powerful way in which this message is being delivered! This is dead on. There’s no justification for rape whether a woman is wearing a “meat dress” or slacks and a baggy shirt.

Agreed. I think most people agree. However, it only takes a few people’s wrong opinion to ruin a good idea!
